Spirit of Play

Bass playing is essentially easy. There are four strings, and you play one at a time. Play a combination of root notes, thirds, fifths and the occasional seventh, and you can't go far wrong. If you can find fun ways of joining these notes up, whilst moving through the chord progression, and at the same time provide a bit of drive and energy to the overall sound, you've cracked it. I'm currently getting lots of satisfaction by finding ascending bass lines that run through a non ascending chord progression. Gives a bit of texture and colour, dunnit?
